Description
Seed Sovereignity with Randa Toko
Seed saving is a great way to cultivate and increase varieties in your garden in the cheapest way possible whilst also protecting endangered varieties and heritage plants. But it is also a subversive act, challenging the dominance of industrial agriculture whereby a handful of large corporations control much of the seed market.
Randa Toko from the Gaia Foundation gives us an introduction to the politics of seed saving, and how it represents an opportunity for individuals and communities to assert their right to define and shape their food systems. She is the Southern Coordinator for their Seed Sovereignity programme, which encourages growers in the South of England to reclaim seeds and biodiversity as commons and public good for future generations to come.
In this talk you'll learn more about the importance of seed saving and the Seed Sovereignity programme, and will gain an understanding of seeds as more than just food sources, but also as archives of the relationship between plants and humans, and spaces to engage with the cultural, political and historical intimacies that seeds carry and evoke.
Access Info: Talks take place at the Open Market, which has step-free access and a disabled toilet. The venue is partially-open and does get cold, so please bring extra layers with you!
