Join the Cape Fear Bonsai Society for a special hands-on workshop with Jim Doyle of Nature’s Way Nursery exploring the distinctive literati (bunjin) style of bonsai.
Literati bonsai are characterized by an emphasis on trunk line, negative space, asymmetry, restraint, and relatively sparse foliage. In this workshop, Jim will discuss these characteristics and help participants recognize how they can be expressed in suitable material.
The Cape Fear Bonsai Society will provide Juniperus procumbens material approximately 26–36 inches in length that has been grown upright for several years, along with wire for styling. Each tree is unique, and several offer strong possibilities for literati design. Others may suggest a different direction based on their individual trunk movement, branching, and character.
Rather than forcing every tree into the same form, Jim will work with each participant to evaluate the material and determine an appropriate design direction, with literati serving as the primary focus of the workshop.
Participation is limited to 8 trees to allow time for individual instruction, design discussion, and hands-on work.
Participants will leave with their tree, a clearer direction for its continued development, and a deeper understanding of literati design and the process of evaluating bonsai material.
Workshop participants are also encouraged to attend the Full-Day Bonsai Demonstration with Jim Doyle on Sunday, September 27, offered as a separate event.

The Cape Fear Bonsai Society, established in 2001, is a group that meets monthly to study and practice the art of Bonsai.
The club has an active program of training through workshops, guest speakers, and a sharing of Bonsai expertise. Membership is open to both the novice and the more experienced practitioner of Bonsai.
