Work directly with Jim Doyle of Nature’s Way Nursery in this small-group, hands-on workshop focused on the distinctive literati (bunjin) style of bonsai.
Defined by expressive trunk lines, negative space, asymmetry, restraint, and sparse foliage, literati bonsai invite a thoughtful approach to design. Jim will explore these defining characteristics and help participants identify how they can emerge from suitable bonsai material.
The Cape Fear Bonsai Society will provide Juniperus procumbens material approximately 26–36 inches in length that has been grown upright for several years, along with wire for styling. Each tree is unique, offering different possibilities based on its trunk movement, branching, and character.
Rather than shaping every tree according to one template, Jim will work with each participant to assess the material and select an appropriate design direction, with literati as the workshop’s central focus.
Participation is limited to 8 trees, allowing ample time for individual guidance, design discussion, and hands-on styling.
Participants will leave with their tree, a clearer plan for its continued development, and a deeper understanding of literati design and the process of evaluating bonsai material.
Workshop participants are also encouraged to attend the Full-Day Bonsai Demonstration with Jim Doyle on Sunday, September 27, offered as a separate event.

The Cape Fear Bonsai Society, established in 2001, is a group that meets monthly to study and practice the art of Bonsai.
The club has an active program of training through workshops, guest speakers, and a sharing of Bonsai expertise. Membership is open to both the novice and the more experienced practitioner of Bonsai.
