Setting the Scene: Ties for Beginning Your Play

So, you understand the fundamentals and have a good grasp of your rope, but your scenes feel like they’re missing a certain “spark.” Maybe you find yourself getting bored while being tied, waiting for the “real” scene to begin. Or perhaps you feel like your play suddenly spikes in intensity, without much build-up throughout your scene.

Often, we may feel like we’re going through the motions, treating scene set-up like a checklist: getting into the right position, unravelling rope bundles, tying the right harnesses, and so on. However, every one of these preparation steps can be an opportunity to bring play into the scene from the very beginning.

In this intermediate-level class, participants will explore how to make the beginning of a rope scene an intentional part of the play. Through demonstrations and discussion, we’ll delve into the different choices we can make to shape these opening moments and add texture to our scenes.

Topics covered will include

  • Rituals for entering a scene

  • Warm-up exercises for creating a shared headspace between the person tying and the person being tied

  • Using positioning to create connection and space for scene progression

  • Pacing and building intensity within your rope scenes

Prerequisites:

Participants tying should already be comfortable with foundational skills including single columns, double columns, upper body and lower body harnesses, as well as have knowledge of at least one upline style. Tying participants should be prepared to receive feedback from their partners with curiosity.

Participants being tied should have strong body awareness and be able to communicate and provide feedback before, during, and after a tie.

Both partners should have a working understanding of rope safety, including nerve risk, emotional awareness, and safe rope placement.

Because this class centers on connection and emotional intimacy, participants should attend with someone they feel comfortable exploring those things with.

Materials: 2-3 hanks of rope (8-10 meters long)

Format: Demonstrations, discussion, and guided partner exercises.

Presenters:
