Shadow Work: Reclaiming the Hidden Self
A 5-Week Course in Self-Discovery
There are parts of us that learned to hide in order to survive, belong, or be accepted. These hidden aspects — our fears, wounds, power, and unexpressed emotions — often influence our triggers, relationships, and life patterns. This is what is often called the shadow.
In this five-week course, we will gently explore these hidden aspects of the self and learn how to approach them with awareness, compassion, and curiosity. Through discussion, reflection, guided exercises, and Shamanic Journeys, students will begin recognizing shadow patterns and reclaiming parts of themselves that have been pushed aside.
Students will receive a take-home workbook with journaling prompts, reflection exercises, and practices designed to help integrate the material between classes.
Course Breakdown
Week 1: Understanding the Shadow – Monday, April 6th 7pm-9:30pm
We begin by exploring what the shadow is and how it forms. Students will learn how the psyche creates hidden parts of the self in response to childhood experiences, social expectations, and survival strategies. This class introduces the foundation of shadow work and helps students begin recognizing where the shadow may be influencing their lives.
Week 2: Triggers and Emotional Mirrors - Monday, April 13th 7pm-9:30pm
Strong emotional reactions often reveal hidden aspects of the self. In this class, students will explore how triggers act as mirrors that reveal unresolved emotions and suppressed traits. We begin learning how to approach these reactions with curiosity rather than judgment.
Week 3: Projection and the Shadow in Relationships - Monday, April 20th 7pm-9:30pm
Many of the traits we judge or admire in others can reflect parts of ourselves that we have disowned. This week focuses on understanding projection and how our relationships can reveal deeper layers of the shadow. Students will begin identifying where their shadow may be showing up in their interactions with others.
This class includes a Shamanic Journey to the Cave of Mirrors, where students will symbolically encounter reflections of themselves and explore what those reflections reveal.
Week 4: Shadow Archetypes and Protective Patterns - Monday, April 27th 7pm-9:30pm
The shadow often takes on recognizable patterns such as the inner critic, the people pleaser, the controller, or the avoider. In this class we explore how these patterns developed as protective strategies and how they continue to shape behavior. Students will begin recognizing which archetypal patterns show up most strongly in their lives.
Week 5: Integration and Reclaiming the Self - Monday, May 4th 7pm-9:30pm
In the final class we focus on integration — the process of welcoming hidden parts of the self back into awareness with compassion. Students will explore how shadow aspects can transform into sources of wisdom, strength, and authenticity. The course concludes with a Shamanic Journey to the Cave of Shadows, where students will have the opportunity to meet and begin integrating a hidden aspect of themselves.
