The Mabry-Hazen House Museum, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is located atop Mabry's Hill in Knoxville, Tennessee. Built in 1858, three generations of the same family resided in the Italianate-style home overlooking downtown Knoxville, the Tennessee River, and Great Smoky Mountains. Furnished and decorated in the style of several decades, Mabry-Hazen gives a rare view into 130 years of Knoxville history. The museum showcases one of the largest original family collections in America with over 2,500 original artifacts on display. Learn about the origins of Knoxville's iconic Market Square, the bitter divisions of the Civil War, the infamous 1882 Gunfight on Gay Street, a mountain city in the New South, the scandalous 1934 breach of promise and seduction trial, and much more through the rich, colorful lives of the Mabry and Hazen families.
Description
Knoxville Shakespeare and Mabry-Hazen House present Shakespeare On The Hill: The Winter's Tale
The Tennessee Stage Company opens its 36th season with Shakespeare On The Hill.
At 7:30 pm on Thursday, May 8 - Saturday, May 10, 2025, 7:30 pm on Thursday, May 15 - Saturday, May 18, 2025, and a 2:00 pm Matinee on Sunday, May 11 & Sunday, May 18, 2025, the company will present the Bard’s beloved play, "A Winter's Tale" in collaboration with Mabry-Hazen House.
Family, fairytale, and forgiveness entwine in this lyrical, late-Shakespearean Romance. When King Leontes wrongfully accuses his wife of adultery, he unleashes a storm of tragedy upon the kingdom of Sicilia. His libeled queen, Hermione, succumbs to sorrow, and their newborn child is left to perish in a foreign land. Sixteen years later, a young prince and a mysterious peasant girl elope to Sicilia, leading to an extraordinary reunion that just might give everyone a happily ever after. What we changed was Innocence for Innocence. We knew not the doctrine of ill-doing, nor dreamed that any did.
The Winter’s Tale begins on the steps of the historic Mabry Hazen Home. Following intermission, the story moves to the gazebo, just across the lawn. The final act comes following a brief second intermission, during which the audience and the tale finish just where the show began.
