Built in colonial Setauket around 1730, the Sherwood-Jayne Farm House survives today in its original 18th century agrarian landscape. It served as the home of the Jayne family, including William Jayne II, a prominent Loyalist during the Revolutionary War. The Jaynes maintained the farm for over 150 years before selling it in 1908 to New York attorney Howard Sherwood, the founder of Preservation Long Island. Sherwood was an early advocate for historic preservation and an important figure in the Colonial Revival movement. He restored the farm to its colonial appearance and used the house to showcase his collection of American and European antiques. Today, Preservation Long Island operates the Sherwood-Jayne Farm as a house museum and continues Howard Sherwood’s mission of advocating for historic preservation on Long Island.
