SHIPSEA in San Francisco | NOTES FROM LATVIA
Latvian musician Jānis Šipkēvics and his ensemble SHIPSEA are bringing their music to the United States. Notes from Latvia is an evening of original SHIPSEA songs alongside reimagined Latvian folk tunes.
This collection of songs carries the spirit of Latvian identity – pieces that bring calm, spark energy, inspire, and at the same time remind us of our roots.
The night will feature Jānis Šipkēvics’ own works – Siltā gaismā, Tavi viļņi, and Pie upes – from his award-winning album Apgaismo mani (Illuminate Me). The album was widely acclaimed in Latvia and in 2022 was named both Best Pop Recording and Album of the Year. The set also includes music by composer Imants Kalniņš – whom Jānis sees as his greatest teacher in songwriting – as well as traditional Latvian folk songs shaped through SHIPSEA’s unique sound.
