About the Course: The art of combining improv and theatre is a hands-on workshop where participants use character descriptions and short scripts to create scenes and monologues, developing the ability to move fluidly between text and improv while maintaining consistent character work.
Instructor Bio: Jason A Phillips is a founding member of the Phantom Lamp Theatre Company. He studied theatre at Southwestern University. He has worked in Austin, TX with Rude Mechanicals and Vortex Theatre, and in Chicago with Lifeline Theatre. With over 30 years of experience as an actor, director, and writer, Jason brings a deep commitment to both scripted and devised performance. In Asheville, his credits include conceiving and co-writing New Queer’s Eve and something i cared about (which he also directed) with The Magnetic Theatre. He has also worked with Parkway Playhouse, Asheville Community Theatre, The Montford Park Players, Adesto Theatre Company, and the Asheville Fringe Arts Festival. Over the past five years, Jason has added a focus on improvisation, studying with the Asheville School of Improv and Misfit Improv, and currently performs with the improv troupes Assembly Required and Secret Spice.
Requirements: Please bring a writing utensil, a notebook and a water bottle, and be sure to wear clothing that you’re comfortable moving in.
