Smooth, Beautiful tunes on Piano Accordion
Welcome to the piano accordion as a powerful, versatile instrument that can do way more than play oom-pah, oom-pah! At this workshop, we'll focus on how to bring the maximum amount of heart-melting beauty out of a few smooth, sweet tunes from the Celtic, French, English, and contra dance traditions. I was always jealous that pianists could play flowing arpeggios and guitar players could do all that sparkly finger-picking stuff, so I spent many years exploring methods for using the superpowers of the piano accordion to make the most of the delicate and pretty tunes. We'll treat the right hand like a singer, breathing with the bellows to create beautiful phrasing and dynamics. We'll experiment with left hand techniques to provide smooth support under the melody. We'll think about arrangements and non-melody ideas for the right hand, and we'll be sure you leave with a whole big variety of tools for what to do when you encounter lovely tunes out in the world. Come with at least a basic level of proficiency on the piano accordion. The workshop will shape-shift to meet the needs of folks on the advanced beginner/early intermediate level all the way up through experienced players.
