Description

Stop by the East Wing of the Robert Ferguson Observatory for free Solar Observing. Offered on the same day as our Public Star Party, guests can visit during the day for an inside look at the observatory and safely view the Sun through three specialized filters, each revealing a different layer of solar activity.

Our neutral-density filter highlights dark sunspots on the photosphere, the hydrogen-alpha filter unveils glowing prominences and solar flares, and the calcium-K filter reveals magnetic activity and bright regions in the lower chromosphere.

Our volunteers will guide you through each view and share insights into solar science, space weather, and radio astronomy. This free, family-friendly event offers a rare opportunity to explore the dynamic face of our nearest star. Telescope viewing can be difficult for children under 4, though younger visitors can still enjoy safe solar-themed activities and demonstrations.

This is a free event, but donations and pre-registration via SimpleTix is appreciated.
