━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

After a wildly successful staged reading this past summer, Matthew Lopez’s heartfelt and exhilarating play Somewhere dances its way onto The Ringwald stage for a full production this February.

Set in 1959 New York City, Somewhere follows the Candelarias—a Puerto Rican family dreaming big in a neighborhood on the brink of demolition. As Robert Moses’ urban renewal plan threatens their home, the family clings to the thing that has always carried them through: the unshakable belief in the magic of Broadway. With auditions for West Side Story in the air, they chase hopes, confront realities, and hold tight to each other in a world that continually asks them to fight to be seen.

By turns joyous, funny, and deeply moving, Lopez’s play blends family drama with show-biz fantasy, weaving dance and memory into a story about resilience, representation, and the power of dreaming even when the city seems determined to squeeze you out.

This February, The Ringwald invites you to step somewhere between the real and the imagined—where hope leaps higher than the skyline and every family deserves to take center stage.

The Ringwald Theatre

The Ringwald's mission is to engage diverse audiences through fresh, risk-taking theatrical experiences. Seasons will include productions focusing primarily on newer works, previously un-produced scripts, and innovative interpretations of seasoned classics.

The Ringwald opened our doors to our Ferndale location at 9 Mile & Woodward in May of 2007 with Fatal Attraction: A Greek Tragedy and quickly became a mainstay of Detroit’s theatre community.

In a newly-formed partnership with Affirmations LGBTQ+ Community Center, The Ringwald will open their new home inside the center in the fall of 2021 after temporarily shutting its doors at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, despite a successful 14 year residency on Woodward and 9 mile.
