Embark on a creative journey of self-expression in this environmental self-portrait photography workshop.
We’ll begin our adventure at Carkeek Park, where, under self-portrait photographer Sara Kushner's expert guidance, we’ll explore the interplay of self and nature. You’ll discover how posing, perspective, and composition can help you create art you are proud of while nurturing a deeper connection to yourself and the world around you.
Then, on Monday, we'll meet at Push/Pull to edit our photos in Adobe Lighthroom. As we delve into color grading, light manipulation, and composition refinement, you’ll learn to reveal your creative essence.
Join us for this transformative experience to celebrate your individuality, express your creativity, and find harmony with the environment. This workshop is perfect for photographers of all levels looking to express themselves creatively while enjoying the great outdoors.

Workshop FAQs
Do I have to attend both days?
The workshop will be broken up into two parts: a photo shoot session on day 1, and an editing session on day 2. It's designed for you to attend both!
I'm a total beginner. Can I attend?
Yes! This workshop is for all levels. I will be doing demonstrations and providing guidance throughout both days.
What equipment do I need?
Day 1: camera (any type!), tripod (optional), intervalometer (optional), outfit to wear in photos, jacket, hat, gloves, props (optional)
Day 2: laptop or tablet loaded up with your photos and Adobe Lightroom.
Isn't a self-portrait basically just a glorified selfie?
Actually, no! Self portraiture is art, creativity, patience, solitude, community, meditation, self-expression, body image healing, self-acceptance, quality time in natyre, and so much more. During this workshop, you'll have the opportunity to discover what self portraiture is to you.
What should I wear in my photos?
Anything that makes you feel beautiful, comfortable, and creative. I will bring a few dresses in varying sizes for those of you who'd like more options. (If you choose to wear a costume that I bring, be prepared to change in the public restroom, your car, or the woods.)
How can I expect to feel after the workshop?
I tend to feel a strong sense of groundedness, connection, and peace after a photo session. You may feel energized, proud, curious, or excited.
What if I don't have a tripod?
That's okay! You can partner up with someone and take turns being human tripods for each other. I have also been known to balance my camera on the ground/a log/my shoe when I'm tripod-less. It's aaaaaall about creativity.
Can I use my phone camera?
Absolutely. Phone camera, digital camera, DSLR, mirrorless -- all are welcome!
Won't it be cold? It's November!
Yes, I expect it will be a bit chilly. When I shoot in the cold I come prepared with a jacket, hat, mittens, hand warmers, and foot warmers, and I put all those layers on in between shots and while I'm reviewing my photos. I would recommend bundling up!
I'll also come prepared with plenty of hand and foot warmers for students to use, so no worries if you don't have your own!
What's the plan if it rains on photo day?
Unless it's downpouring, I'll be at Carkeek Park on Sunday afternoon ready to take photos! Raincoats and umbrellas will be highly useful accessories if it does rain during our photo session.
As of right now, the plan is the spend some time in the woods and some time on the beach, but we may decide as a group to stay in the woods if they provide more rain cover.
What if it's crowded and I'm nervous about people watching me?
It can feel super silly and uncomfortable to pose in front of a crowd. We will do our best to find quiet spots and creative a space space for self-expression.
If we do have an audience, we'll do our best to remain focused on our little group and photos. There will never be any pressure on you to continue shooting if you feel uncomfortable!
I don't have Lightroom and don't plan on paying for it at this time. Can I still come?
I will be doing an editing tutorial in Lightroom on the second day of the workshop, as that is the program I use. I would recommend at least getting a free trial of Lightroom so you're able to participate in the editing portion.
If you have another program you like and know how to use, you're welcome to do so! I just can't guarantee that I will be able to assist if you have specific questions.
