Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a partner?

No partner is needed. You are welcome to register on your own, with a friend, or as a couple. East Coast Swing is a social dance, and we will help everyone feel included and comfortable.

Do I need dance experience?

No dance experience is needed. This class is beginner-friendly and designed for people who are brand new to East Coast Swing.

What is East Coast Swing?

East Coast Swing is a fun, upbeat partner dance rooted in the swing dance tradition. In this class, we’ll focus mostly on classic swing and Lindy Hop-style music, helping students learn the rhythm, timing, and feel of the dance in a fun, authentic way.

Is this the same as ballroom dancing?

Not exactly. East Coast Swing is often taught in ballroom studios, but what we teach is focused on social dancing — the kind of dancing you can actually use at a party, wedding, live music event, or community dance.

What will we learn?

You will learn the basics of East Coast Swing, including rhythm, connection, simple turns, lead-and-follow skills, and how to feel more confident dancing with another person.

What if I have two left feet?

You are exactly who this class is for. We keep things simple, welcoming, and encouraging. The goal is not perfection — the goal is to get moving, have fun, and leave smiling.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move easily. Casual attire is perfectly fine. You do not need anything fancy.

What kind of shoes should I wear?

Wear comfortable shoes that stay securely on your feet. Tennis shoes or casual shoes are great. Avoid flip-flops, backless sandals, or shoes that are hard to move in.

Will we rotate partners?

Yes, we may rotate partners during class so everyone has a chance to practice and meet new people. If you come with a partner and prefer to stay together, that is okay too.

Is this good for couples?

Yes. East Coast Swing is a great date-night activity and a fun way for couples to learn something together. It is also great for singles, friends, and anyone looking for a welcoming social activity.

Is this a class or a social dance?

This event includes beginner-friendly instruction and time to dance. The focus is on helping you learn enough to feel comfortable actually using what you learned.

What age group is this for?

Adults of all ages are welcome. If you enjoy good music, friendly people, and learning something fun, you will fit right in.

Do I need to attend every session?

You will get the most out of the series by attending each session, since each class builds on the previous one. But if you miss one, we will help you get caught up as best we can.

Where do we meet?

We meet at Gathering on Main, located at 8826 Main Street, Woodstock, GA 30188, in historic downtown Woodstock.

Should I arrive early?

Yes. Please arrive a few minutes early so you can check in, get settled, and meet your instructors before class begins.

Is there parking nearby?

Yes, there is free parking available at Gathering on Main.

What should I bring?

Bring yourself, comfortable shoes, and a smile. Water is also a good idea.

Will I be embarrassed if I am new?

Not at all. Most people are nervous the first time they try something new. We work hard to create a relaxed, friendly environment where beginners feel welcome.

What is the goal of the class?

The goal is to help you feel comfortable, confident, and connected on the dance floor — not to overwhelm you with complicated steps.

Who is hosting the event?

This event is hosted by Southbound Swing, a local swing dance community focused on joyful social dancing, beginner-friendly instruction, and authentic East Coast Swing.
