Do you have a part of a meg found on the Island? If so, we invite you to come in with your locally found megalodon fragments. In the traditional speed dating style, we'll have everyone spend a few minutes with each other checking to see if their megs match.
While the odds may be low that matches will be made, it has happened before - TWICE! Come into the fossil center to see the famous heart-broken meg which started all of this! One half was found by Herb Ferguson, and the other half was found by another person several miles away. These two halves were reunited several years later when both gentlemen happened to be at Fernandina Fossils. As you can see from the picture at the bottom of the page, they are a perfect match.
This match inspired us to set up an event to try to make more matches, and Speed Dating for Broken Hearted Megs was born. At our first event in December 2025, another match was made, and we decided to make this a regular event. Even if matches aren't made, it is great fun to see all the fragalodons that people have found, and to meet other passionate fossil hunters. It is the perfect event for Fern Foss, because when we first applied for our business permit with the City, we were asked if Fernandina Fossils would be a dating site for old folks! This isn't a dating event, but we love the idea of fossils bringing people together and want to encourage by hosting regular events.
Any matched megs will be photographed and added to our "Fernandina Famous" hall of fame. We found our match - will you find yours?
