Sport Club Portuguese

Sport Club Português, located at 55 Prospect Street in Newark, New Jersey, is a cultural organization founded in 1921 that offers various activities for the Portuguese community in the region. Since its inception, the club has been an important center for the preservation and promotion of Portuguese culture in the United States.

One of the main activities offered by Sport Club Português is the teaching of the Portuguese language, through classes held at the Luis de Camoes School, which is part of the club. In addition, the club also has three soccer teams, a folklore group called Rancho Camponeses do Minho, an event hall, a member lounge, a bar, and an art group called Proverbo.

For several decades, the club had a semi-professional soccer team called Newark Portuguese, which stood out in local and regional competitions. The club is also home to the Lusofonos, a motorcycle group founded in 2019, and the Tugas, a percussion group created in 2014.

Since its founding, Sport Club Português has been a meeting point for the Portuguese community in Newark, serving as a support venue for many newly arrived immigrants from Portugal. The club has also been fundamental to the preservation of Portuguese culture and traditions in the region, through its cultural, sports, and educational activities.

Over the years, Sport Club Português has stood out for its dedication to promoting Portuguese culture in the Newark region, contributing to the integration and unity of the Portuguese community in the United States. To this day, the club continues to be a point of reference for the Portuguese community in Newark and an important institution for the preservation of the rich Portuguese culture and traditions.
