Description

The New Holland Band, esteemed as the nation’s second oldest civilian concert band, has scheduled their Spring Concert 2026 for Sunday, March 29 in the Good Shepherd Chapel at Lancaster Bible College. The storied Lancaster County institution’s annual performance began in the late 1950s and marks the beginning of the ensemble’s performance season.

On the program are Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Procession of the Nobles”, Shostakovich’s “Festive Overture”, selections from the movie How to Train Your Dragon, a medley of tunes from rock-n-roll legend Billy Joel titled “Billy Joel in Concert”, and marches including “The Standard of St. George”, “Mars der Midici”, and more.

The special guest for Spring Concert 2026 is nationally recognized trombonist Jim McFalls. The retired US Army veteran was a featured soloist and lead trombone with the Army’s premier touring jazz ensemble, the Jazz Ambassadors. He has performed at jazz festivals including Montreux, Nice, North Sea, Newport, and recently concluded a distinguished career as a member of the Towson University Jazz and Commercial Music Studies faculty. A native of Columbia, Pennsylvania, McFalls graduated from Columbia High School in 1977 and studied with the longtime New Holland Band trombonist and euphonium player Russ Sumpman. Sumpman was a mentor to many of the New Holland Band’s low brass players who, like McFalls, went on to have successful careers in some of our nation’s most prestigious music ensembles. McFalls played in the New Holland Band from 1974 until joining the US Army in 1977.

The New Holland Band’s Spring Concert 2026 begins at 3 p.m. in Good Shepherd Chapel located on the campus of Lancaster Bible College at 901 Eden Road in Lancaster. Tickets are $25, with free admission for children and students, and can be purchased at www.newhollandband.org or by calling (717) 355- 5096.

The New Holland Band

Located in New Holland, Pennsylvania surrounded by the rich farmland of eastern Lancaster County, the New Holland Band traces its history to 1829 when a group of musicians from town playing fifes and drums formed a band to provide music for the 51st Regiment of the Pennsylvania State Militia. The nation’s 2nd oldest community band served in the American Civil War as the regimental band for the 203rd Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers and throughout its storied history appears in print archives under names including the New Holland Village Band, the Patriotic Order Sons of America Band, the Citizens Band of New Holland, and the Victory Band of New Holland.

With a legacy of mentoring young musicians begun by music director Samuel O. Zimmerman and continued through the leadership of Marlin Houck and Dr. Kenneth Laudermilch, members of the New Holland Band have filled the ranks of our nation’s top military bands as well as holding positions in symphony and opera orchestras.

Newly appointed director Fred Hughes joined the New Holland Band while a junior-high school student, playing tuba alongside his father and performing solos with the band. He is a product of the band’s dedication to mentoring young musicians and is now enjoying a professional career with extensive experience in the band, orchestra, and jazz world. He will continue the legacy of the band begun in 1829 and is committed to serving New Holland and the region for years to come.
