Description

This spring performance features three ballets performed orginally by the Ballets Russes. The Ballets Russes was an itinerant ballet company that began in Paris that performed between 1909 and 1929 throughout Europe and on tours to North and South America.

The Firebird is a ballet and orchestral concert work by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. It was written for the 1910 Paris season and  tells the story of Prince Ivan who defeats the evil Kastchei with the help of the Firebird, who offers one of her enchanted feathers to Prince Ivan after he spares her life while hunting in the forest.

Les Sylphides is a short, non-narrative ballet blanc to piano music by Frédéric Chopin, selected and orchestrated by Alexander Glazunov. The ballet, described as a "romantic reverie", is frequently cited as the first ballet to be simply about mood and dance. The story of La Sylphide concerns a young Scotsman, James, who is about to be married to Effie. The morning of the wedding day, James is dozing in a chair by the fire when a Sylphide appears beside him and wakens him with an airy kiss. She dances for him before she vanishes up the chimney.

La Boutique Fantasque, also known as The Magic Toyshop or The Fantastic Toyshop, is a ballet in one act conceived by Léonide Massine.  Ottorino Respighi wrote the music based on piano pieces by Gioachino Rossini. The ballet is set in France in 1860. A world-famous toymaker has created exquisite dancing dolls in his magic toyshop.

Please note. The first two rows may have partially obstructed-viewing for shorter-statured people due to the distance of the first row to the stage. Seats will not be able to be adjusted upon arrival.
