Stannous Fuming and Obvara firing.
A combination workshop featuring Stannous fuming and Obvara firing.
Stannous fuming is a 2 step process. First the piece is glazed with a low fire opaque glaze, fired to maturity then sprayed with ferric chloride. This produces a shiny slivery sheen on the piece. You may decide that this is exactly what the piece needs to be perfect. If you think that it could use a little more WOW factor, once cooled the piece is put back in the kiln and heated to 1000 deg F. Once the kiln is hot dishes of Stannous are placed in the kiln and allowed to fume for about 30 minutes. The results are stunning.
Obvara uses a fermented liquid mixture that interacts with wares pulled directly from the kiln then dipped into it. Once the desired effect is achieved the hot piece is plunged into cool water to stop the coloring process.
Both techniques are fun and produce beautiful finishes.
Participants are allowed to bring 6 pieces that measure no larger than 8" x 8". All Glazing material and equipment will be provided.
Must be at least 18 years old.
2 tickets will be available for participants 16-17 yrs old accompanied by a parent at $202.50. This will include 6 pieces for the 2 combined participants.
