Description

Steve Hirsh composes music on the drumset. His music is created in real-time, on the bandstand. This music cannot be defined, limited or categorized by genre. It is a process for creating that draws from all the influences of all the players. Based in Minnesota, Steve tours nationally and collaborates with improvising musicians around the world. Among those he has worked with are Daniel Carter, William Parker, Dave Sewelson, Matthew Shipp, Eri Yamamoto, Steve Swell, Sally Gates, Matt Hollenberg, Zoh Amba, Ellen Christi, Luke Stewart and Joel Futterman. His collaborations with top free-jazz innovators have shaped a responsive, interactive style that anchors the ensembles with both rhythmic drive and creative color.

The burning guitarist of Cleric and John Zorn’s Simulacrum, Matt Hollenberg’s sonic world traverses avant-garde classical, free jazz, dissonant math metal, ambient, and world music. Originally from Philadelphia, Brooklyn-based Hollenberg composes complex and exciting pieces. As a collaborator with John Zorn, John Medeski, and many others, his work is a mind-melting blend of fiery solos and improvisational madness.

Dave was born in Oakland, California, in 1952. There was a half-size violin kept in the closet in case he wanted to be a concert violinist. He played trumpet at the age of nine, moving to baritone horn at the age of eleven, followed by a stint on drums until settling on electric bass at thirteen, adding upright bass to the mix until the switch to saxophone at the age of twenty-one. He has specialized in the baritone saxophone since the early seventies.

Sewelson arrived in New York City in the summer of 1977, settled in the East Village, played in many bands in the area including the 25 O'Clock Band, Jemeel Moondoc’s Jus Grew Orchestra, Noise R Us, Mofungo, Freedomland and Fast 'n Bulbous. He was a founding member of the Microscopic Septet. Lifetime member of William Parker’s Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra.
