Description

Ask any Tejano music fan and they’ll agree...Stevie D is unquestionably one of the most exciting artists in Tejano music today. A native of Brownsville, Texas, Stevie was born in Fresno, California but moved to Brownsville with his parents when he was just 3 years old. Stevie took an interest in music and began learning how to play guitar at the age of 11 after the sudden passing of his mother, Candy Dominguez. In a brave move for a young boy, and as a touching tribute to his mom, he insisted on playing for her at her services. “I wanted to express my love for my mom in a way that I knew would make her proud. I literally learned how to play a basic three chord progression and follow another guitarist at my mothers’ services. That is oddly enough, a very proud moment for me”. Continuing his passion for music, Stevie joined his church choir at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Brownsville. He played, sang, and was as an alter server until his early teens. After graduating from high school, Stevie joined the United States Navy in 1988. Stevie is a Desert Storm veteran and served his time defending our country. He was honorably discharged in June of 1992. Upon his honorable discharge, Stevie returned to Brownsville and decided to pursue a career as a singer. He joined a local band and performed for a variety of social functions including quinceañeras, weddings, and other private events. After a couple of years, Stevie left to join another local up and coming group called Rio Express Band. Stevie performed with Rio Express for two years. During this time, he began developing a plan to form his own group and started searching for Brownsville’s finest talent to create what would become one of the Rio Grande Valley’s premier variety bands, The Texas Shooters. Stevie recruited musicians such as Mike Gonzalez (Jimmy Gonzalez y Grupo Mazz), Adolfo Garcia (Kumbia Kings), and several other well-respected players to be part of this project. Not long after forming The Texas Shooters, Stevie recorded several singles with Lorenzo Lopez (brother of Mazz vocalist Joe Lopez) and Brando Mireles (former Grupo Mazz keyboardist) at Lopez’s studio in Brownsville, TX (Loren Records). Although none of the recordings were ever officially released, many of those tapes still remain in Stevie’s private collection. Four years later, after the well-publicized breakup of original Mazz co-founders Jimmy Gonzalez and Joe Lopez, Stevie was invited to join Joe Lopez’s new group, Joe Lopez Y La Nueva Imagen Mazz. Initially brought on to work as a road manager and assistant to Lopez, Stevie began displaying his vocal talents at soundchecks and soon found his way onto the stage as a back-up vocalist. On July 4, 2003, Stevie made his final appearance with Joe Lopez y La Nueva Imagen Mazz at an outdoor concert on South Padre Island. After a 15-year hiatus from the Tejano industry, Stevie reunited with La Nueva Imagen and the former members of the Joe Lopez era group. Stevie and the band took to the stage at the San Antonio Livestock Show & Rodeo in 2016. Afterwards, it didn’t take long for Stevie to realize he’d had a long enough break and was ready for a comeback. Stevie reconnected with Brando Mireles and together decided it was prime time to work on something fresh for Tejano! Stevie and Brando worked together on Stevie’s first single, “Como Fue”, with Brando acting as arranger, producer and musical director for the project. Mireles then brought in noted Tejano producer and guitarist, Gilbert Velasquez (14-time Grammy Award winner) to add his playing skills and mixing magic. Other musicians on the project included Grammy Award winner Chente Barrera on drums and Val Maltos on keyboards. “Como Fue” was released in 2017 and received strong support from Tejano radio. In the fall of 2017, Stevie followed up “Como Fue” with the release of his first full length album, De Repente, on his own Steady Music label. The album was well- received by Tejano music fans and radio stations on both sides of the US – Mexican border. Stevie toured extensively behind the album and successfully secured supporting slots and co-headlining performances alongside established Tejano greats such as Jay Perez, Jimmy Gonzalez Y Grupo Mazz, and Ram Herrera to name a few. In 2018, Stevie was nominated and won the award for the TMA’s 2018 Best New Male Artist. The following year, after months on the road and hundreds of performances in support of De Repente, Stevie released his sophomore album, Ahora Sigo Yo. The album included the hit single, “Dame”. Co-written by Stevie and Jay Alaniz, the song became a Top 5 hit on Tejano charts across the U.S. He followed that up with two more smash singles, “Hombre Normal” and “El Primer Tonto”, both of which reached the top of the national Tejano charts. Stevie also collaborated with Shelly Lares on the hit track, “Me Muero Por Tu Amor”, which went on to win the 2018 MTA’s Best Collaboration of the Year. In March of 2020, Stevie made his most important career move yet when he signed with the legendary label, Freddie Records. Looking to grow his fan base and reach a much wider audience with his music, Stevie knew it was the opportunity of a lifetime. “Freddie Records is an iconic label with a long track record of developing and working with acts that have gone on to become some of the biggest and most influential artists in the history of the Latin music industry’, said Stevie. “I’m incredibly honored to be part of the Freddie family of artists and look forward to working with their team to continue building what I started and bringing some incredible music to my fans’. Now, Stevie and Freddie Records are proud to announce the release of Stevie’s highly anticipated debut single under Freddie titled, “La Última Vez”. Written by Latin Grammy-winning songwriter, Juan Treviño, “La Última Vez” is a romantic cumbia with an instantly catchy chorus and outstanding musicianship provided by a stellar cast of some of the industry’s top studio players including Jay Alaniz, Chente Barrera, Cristina Salinas, and Mike Benavides. The track was produced once again by Stevie’s longtime collaborator and keyboardist, Brando Mireles, at Corpus Christi’s famous Legends Sound Studios. The song’s universal message of lost love will resonate with anyone who has ever experienced a tough breakup. “I’m beyond thrilled with how “La Última Vez” turned out”, said Stevie. “The song was originally presented to me by Freddie Martinez, Jr. who thought it would fit my singing style and felt I could do a good job with it. As soon as I heard it, I knew the song would be special.” Stevie, Brando, and their team assembled at Legends Sound Studios in June of 2020 to begin production on the track, as well as other material that will be part of Stevie’s debut album scheduled for release later this fall on Freddie Records. “Our team worked extremely hard on these new songs”, said Stevie. “I know expectations are high. I don’t intend to disappoint anyone”. He added, “The album includes a great mix of upbeat rancheras, cumbias, and a variety of really cool songs. It’s an album that fans will be able to dance to, cry to, party to, and a whole lot more. I’m anxious for the world to hear it”. *Info released by M Music & Entertainment Group, LLC / Freddie Record
