Description
Diane Arbus’s photography draws viewers from complacency to empathy as she captures the unredacted face of the marginalized. Just as Arbus’s pictures provoke viewers to wonder, imagine, and fill in the blanks through storytelling, we will examine how her art depicts and promotes two key Jewish spiritual and ethical tools – storytelling and concern for the marginalized. We will discuss the evolution of Jewish ethics throughout our prophetic texts in its attitude towards social responsibility and how, through her techniques, she asks viewers to create their own midrashim (interpretive stories) and kindle the ethical imagination.
