Description

The Kamloops Symphony Music School presents a Student Showcase recital on Friday, June 14 at 7:00 pm in the Lori Marchand Theatre, located within the Kelson Hall Centre for Arts & Education at 330 St. Paul Street. This concert is a fundraiser for the Peter Collins Memorial Fund, which provides the money for a bursary to help struggling and deserving youth be able to pursue their passion for music like peter did, as well as an annual scholarship for a student who is studying music in university.

This performance will highlight several of the school's most advanced students. They will be performing in a variety of musical styles on a range of different instruments.

Born and raised in Kamloops, Peter Collins became well-known in the arts community as a very talented singer and musician. He started singing at a very young age, and although his tastes shifted from the heavy metal that he favoured in high school to the beautiful arias and operatic pieces that he became known for as an adult, music had been in his blood since birth. He took his love of music and turned it into a new career when he returned to Kamloops and became a music teacher and voice coach in 2008. Peter loved teaching voice and guitar students at KISSM and at the Kamloops Symphony Music School and would always brag about how well each student was doing each week. Whenever he encountered a student who struggled to make lessons happen financially, he would do whatever he could to help them out. He knew what it was like to love music so much and to struggle to learn the craft, and he wanted to help any willing student to make their dreams happen. And so, when Peter passed away, the Peter Collins Memorial Fund was born to provide bursaries to help other struggling and deserving youth be able to pursue their passion for music like he did.

If you would like to donate directly to the Peter Collins Memorial Fund, you can do so here.

Kamloops Symphony Society

Operating since 1976, the Kamloops Symphony is a fully professional orchestra with an annual operating budget of over $1 million, a significant achievement for an orchestral music organization in a region of just over 100,000 residents.

The primary purpose of the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra (KSO) is to engage and enrich the citizens of Kamloops and the Thompson Valley Region of Interior British Columbia through music. Considered a cornerstone of the cultural fabric of Kamloops, the Symphony’s primary activity is the presentation of high quality professional orchestral concerts. Historically, this has been accomplished through the presentation of nine to ten annual programs, and up to eighteen performances in Kamloops and the neighbouring city of Salmon Arm.

An important part of the Symphony’s mandate is to provide educational opportunities for the citizens of Kamloops. The Symphony also presents concerts for school children, and educational presentations in public and private district schools. Since 2002, the Kamloops Symphony Music School, a division under the Kamloops Symphony, has provided opportunities for music education to citizens of the region, and given further employment opportunities to local musicians. The school has extended our community connections and helped attract professional musicians to live and work in Kamloops.
