Winter in Sugarloaf offers many different colors, shapes, textures, and lighting: great for practicing nature photography.
California Naturalist John Lynch will lead this 3.5 mile, 4-hour hike from the Creekside Nature Trail to Hillside Trail and back through the meadow using our cameras as tools to engage in the aesthetic appreciation of nature while also documenting flora and fauna through iNaturalist. If you haven't used iNaturalist, or haven't made an observation for a while, this is your chance. Just make sure to load the iNaturalist app on your phone before you arrive and have your battery fully charged.
Meet at the main parking lot. Tickets are $15 for general audiences, $7.5 for students, youth (12-17 years old; must be accompanied by a parent or guardian), Sugarloaf members, Sugarloaf volunteers, and free for children under 12. Wear layers, appropriate footwear for slippery/muddy trails, bring at least a quart of water, sun protection, and a fully-charged cell phone or camera. Heavy rain cancels; parking fees apply.
Ease of access: Creekside Trail has two trailheads. The trailhead from the main lot is ADA compliant for about 0.35 miles. Our route for this hike veers off to the left at the White Barn junction, across a narrow bridge and single-track trail that connects with Hillside. Hillside Trail is a gravel and dirt road with two 100-ft hills and a small year-round stream crossing with a plank as a crossing aid. Meadow is a mostly flat composite trail manageable by strollers and wheelchairs from the trailhead to about a mile in, although officially not an ADA-compliant trail. The entire loop is a fire road sometimes driven by authorized vehicles.
