Description

Words & Music: A Choral Collaboration with Novelist Geraldine Brooks is a multimedia performance featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning author Geraldine Brooks. Brooks will travel to the Greater Hartford and Shoreline regions with CONCORA to read excepts from her novels, in each case followed by choral pieces that reflect the theme of the reading performed by CONCORA under the leadership of Artistic Director Chris Shepard. Brooks’s novels span a wide range of eras and themes such as colonial-era Native Americans (Caleb’s Crossing), the persecution of the Jewish people throughout the centuries (People of the Book), enslaved Black people in the Civil War era (March and Horse), and the marginalization and vilification of women in the Middle Ages (A Year of Wonders).

Repertoire for this program includes:

  • Remember not, Lord, our Offenses & Hear My Prayer, O Lord - Henry Purcell
  • Psalms 8 & 100 - Salamone Rossi
  • When David Heard - Norman Dinnerstein
  • Past Life Melodies - Sarah Hopkins
  • Hush on the Death of a Bush Church - Iain Grandage
  • Five Hebrew Love Songs - Eric Whitacre
