200 South Jones Avenue"Talking With" opened in 1982 in New York, produced by the Actors Theater of Louisville and directed by Jon Jory. “Jane Martin,” the listed playwright, is understood to be an alias, and much attendant gossip has never confirmed the actual identity of this writer. Each of the monologues offers a highly original and unusual slice of the human condition, a rare look into the heart in all its pain, ugliness, sometime comedy, and occasional triumph. Snake handlers appear side by side with twirlers, ex-rodeo riders trade stage time with bag ladies; actors dread their opening nights and their auditions; ladies with lamp addictions jostle for attention with tattoo enthusiasts; and grieving daughters confront their loss while Oz enthusiasts parade their custom-made costumes. I know of no other theatrical collection that boasts such un-parallel yet mutually enlightening lives and insights.
All of us have confronted our own ghosts and our own longings while working on this play. If there is a thread that runs through all the monologues, it might be that either we own our losses or our losses own us. In the world of Jane Martin, perhaps those binaries are both true. At any rate, due to our work here, I think we all consider more humanely and inclusively the “different” around us in our everyday lives. We urge you to do the same. After all, they are usually the most interesting people in the room.
