The Air was Full of Smoke and Cinders: the Great Fire of May 10, 1862 

This popular tour told in real time from the voices of those who witnessed it.  The tour explores the many blocks affected by the disastrous fire of May 10, 1862 that started when a locomotive’s sparks ignited a fire on the wooden covered Green Island Bridge, quickly turning it into a firestorm that killed more than 15 people and destroyed over 500 buildings with a monetary loss of more than 2 million dollars.  

 

Please Note:

  • This walking tour begins in front of the Arts Center of the Capital Region located  at 265 River St., Troy, and ends at the Hart Cluett Museum at 57 2nd St., Troy
  • New! Admission to the museum is now included in the cost of the walking tours. Tickets are $20 per person/$15 HCM Members. Children age 17 and under free.
  • Tours take place rain or shine, and run from 60 to 90 minutes long. The tour experience includes walking several blocks on city streets with uneven sidewalks. Walking shoes and weather-appropriate attire are advised.
  • The Hart Cluett Museum provides all walking tour participants with headsets, allowing each visitor to listen to the tour guide’s commentary while also ensuring everyone’s safety in accordance with NYS regulations regarding COVID-19. Please note that while you may use or bring your own earpieces/earbuds, single use ear pieces will also be provided by the Hart Cluett Museum at time of tour.
  • Facemasks are optional, but  recommend during all in-person, indoor HCM programs and events.

Cancellation Policy as of April 1, 2022:

Ticketed tours and programs:

 Refunds or exchanges must be requested no fewer than 7 days prior to the program date.  A $4 processing fee will be charged for refunds. If HCM cancels a tour or program, a full refund will be issued.
