The Jewish Food Lab of Wilshire Boulevard Temple presents Rabbi Steve Leder, Bagel Connoisseur Sam Silverman, New York’s “Bagel Ambassador” and founder of BagelFestNY, and Nick Schreiber, one of the founders of LA’s Belle’s Bagels, discuss the iconic bagel. Learn about the bagel’s humble beginnings and the renaissance it is having on both coasts (and everywhere in between).
Sam will be bringing along bagels from New York’s own Utopia Bagels and Belle’s Bagels of Los Angeles will be offering bagel samples to decide which bagel is best and is it really about the water?
This event promises to leave no holes in the American bagel story.

As New York's "Bagel Ambassador," Sam Silverman has been a pivotal figure in the bagel world since 2017. His business, BagelUp, includes NYC Bagel Tours & Classes and the annual New York BagelFest, the industry's premier trade and consumer show, highlighting the global bagel ecosystem and its skilled artisans. Home of some of New York City's best bagels, Utopia Bagels has been a staple in Whitestone since 1981. Their traditional hand-rolled, kettle-boiled, and carousel oven-baked bagels have garnered a loyal following. At peak times, they hand-roll over 100,000 bagels weekly, serving both locals and a nationwide audience via Goldbelly. Featured on BuzzFeed’s "Worth It?" and celebrated by rapper and foodie Action Bronson, Utopia Bagels has become synonymous with authentic New York bagels. Under the leadership of husband-and-wife duo Scott and Katina Spellman, and their son Jesse, Utopia Bagels is set to broaden its horizons with a new location opening in Manhattan this summer.
Nestled in Highland Park, Los Angeles, Belle’s Bagels has become a local sensation since its inception in 2015. Founders Nick Schreiber and J.D. Rocchio transformed their innovative backyard pop-up into one of Bon Appetit's Top 25 Bagel Shops in America. Renowned for their hand-rolled, slow-fermented bagels, Belle’s Bagels stands out with its inventive schmears, like the vibrant beet cream cheese, and unique breakfast sandwiches featuring their signature "shalom sauce." Soon to expand its offerings with the launch of a full-fledged Jewish Deli in Highland Park. Known for their witty and engaging social media presence, they also claim the title of best memes in the bagel industry.
The Jewish Food Lab at Wilshire Boulevard Temple is dedicated to celebrating the tastes and traditions of global Jewish food and culture. Grounded in the richness of Jewish experience and history, the Jewish Food Lab strives to create educational and experiential opportunities for all the senses.
