When the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) began service in 1972, it revolutionized public transportation. As the newest and most technologically advanced rapid transit system of its time, BART introduced groundbreaking innovations including centralized computer control, onboard electronic propulsion, and lightweight railcar design that transformed urban transit around the world.
As BART retired its original fleet, the Western Railway Museum was honored to be selected to preserve three original BART railcars—A Car 1164, B Car 1834, and C Car 329. Together, they represent the only preserved three-car train from BART's original fleet of 669 railcars, ensuring this important piece of Bay Area history will be preserved for future generations.
