Description

Come witness a natural phenomenon! Hannah Smith Allen, a 2026 Erie Canal Artist-in-Residence, has transformed the original Powerhouse at Lock E-12 (Fonda, NY) into a camera obscura. During this temporary camera-obscura, art installation, you’ll be able to see the Canal in real time inside a working camera obscura. Learn about the history of camera technology and discover how to transform any room into an early camera.

Space is limited to 15 people per session. Registration is required.

Good weather is essential for seeing a clear image. We will notify participants by 1 PM on Friday, August 28 if the event is postponed.

  • If one of the two days is severely overcast but the other day has good weather, we will need to move both sessions to the same day so that we can make sure that participants have a good experience.

  • If the entire weekend is a washout, the event will be moved to the weekend of September 12 and September 13.

  • We will notify participants by 1 PM on Friday, August 28 if the event is postponed.

Erie Canal Museum

The Erie Canal Museum, located in Downtown Syracuse, NY, engages the public in the story of the Erie Canal’s transformative impacts on peoples and places in the past, present, and future. We are stewards and interpreters of Erie Canal related materials and heritage. The Museum is housed in the 1850 National Register Weighlock Building, the last remaining structure of its kind. Visit us for exhibits with interactive displays and original artifacts, and engaging programs. The Erie Canal Museum is a must-see for adults and children of all ages.
