━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

This sweeping and emotionally rich two-part stage adaptation of John Irving’s beloved and controversial novel follows Homer Wells, a bright and introspective orphan raised at St. Cloud’s Orphanage in rural Maine under the watchful and complicated care of Dr. Wilbur Larch. Having known only the confines and moral framework of St. Cloud’s, Homer ventures into an unfamiliar world in search of identity, purpose, and the courage to define his own beliefs. Spanning generations and weaving together an unforgettable tapestry of characters, The Cider House Rules explores questions of autonomy, compassion, and responsibility that feel as urgent today as ever. Presented in The Ringwald Theatre’s signature intimate setting, this two-part theatrical event invites audiences to experience the story up close, rewarding those who return for its full emotional journey. Following the profound audience response to our two-part production of The Inheritance, this epic continues The Ringwald’s tradition of bold, immersive storytelling that lingers long after the final curtain.

The Ringwald Theatre

The Ringwald's mission is to engage diverse audiences through fresh, risk-taking theatrical experiences. Seasons will include productions focusing primarily on newer works, previously un-produced scripts, and innovative interpretations of seasoned classics.

The Ringwald opened our doors to our Ferndale location at 9 Mile & Woodward in May of 2007 with Fatal Attraction: A Greek Tragedy and quickly became a mainstay of Detroit’s theatre community.

In a newly-formed partnership with Affirmations LGBTQ+ Community Center, The Ringwald will open their new home inside the center in the fall of 2021 after temporarily shutting its doors at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, despite a successful 14 year residency on Woodward and 9 mile.
