Discover one of the most fascinating migration stories on Earth, as CCMNH aquarist, Sam Remillard, reveals the extraordinary, 3,000 mile journey of the American eel.
Born in the swirling, salty waters of the Sargasso Sea region of the Atlantic Ocean, American eels will spend up to 25 years maturing in freshwater before making a grueling journey back there to mate and spawn. Tens of thousands of them will arrive at the same time, having travelled up to 30 miles a day over 18 months to get there.
“It’s only within the last few years that scientists, using satellite tracking and underwater exploration, have cracked the mystery of eel migration,” said Sam Remillard. “We at the Museum are excited to tell audiences about this remarkable story.”
