Description
The First Rope: Introduction to Connective Tying
When you pare down a scene to a single rope, what is there left to explore?
In this workshop, we’ll delve into the fundamentals of connective tying through a single rope. Instead of focusing on patterns or specific ties, we will concentrate on creating a shared emotional language shaped through intention, attention, and response.
We’ll discover how intention and focus influence a partner’s emotional landscape, and how subtle shifts in movement, positioning, and timing from both partners can change the emotional experience of a scene. Alongside guided exercises, we’ll hold a group discussion on how we can interpret different feelings through rope.
This workshop is designed for those who want to move beyond memorizing ties and begin to understand their “why” behind rope.
Topics will include:
Exploring the technical potential of a single rope
Negotiating improvisational scenes
Developing a shared emotional language
Learning to listen to nonverbal communication
Intentional use of body positioning and movement
Playful exploration and improvisation
Partnering: Individual and tying pair tickets re available, but it is strongly recommended to attend as a tying pair. One tying pair ticket admits two people.
Prerequisites:
This class is intended for advanced beginners to intermediate practitioners ready to move beyond patterned tying. It is recommended that participants attending this class together have tied together before, but isn't required. We will be exploring an emotionally vulnerable space in this class, which some participants might find more beneficial to tie with someone they are familiar with.
The person tying must be proficient in single-column ties. Familiarity with in-line cuffs, half hitches, munter hitches, and basic rope handling will be helpful but is not required.
The person being tied should be comfortable communicating about their experience before, during, and after a scene.
Both partners should have a working understanding of rope safety, including nerve risk, emotional awareness, and safe rope placement.
This class focuses exclusively on floor-based rope.
What to bring:
One rope (8–10 meters)
