The Kirkwood Big Bands, with Special Guest Michael Giles

Join us for the Kirkwood Big Bands, with special guest Michael Giles of Iowa State University! The Kirkwood Community College student Big Band and the CR Jazz Big Band will both be playing one set each of big band standards from all eras. Our special guest for the evening, Michael Giles, will be playing saxophone.

 

A native Iowan, Giles is a vibrant and accessible musician. He is in constant demand as a performer and clinician, both domestically and abroad. He has fused his varied skill set and diverse musical background into a unique perspective that he shares successfully in the classroom and on stage. Giles stays active as an improviser and writer, working with eclectic mixes of personalities and instrumentation. His enthused commitment to original music and inventive approaches to performance have made him a recognizable voice on the creative music scene. His primary teachers include vocal jazz guru Phil Mattson, avant-garde artist John Rapson, and contemporary saxophonist Matt Sintchak. Halfway through his second decade of teaching at Iowa State University, he teaches Improvisation, leads the ISU Saxophone Studio, and is the Director of Jazz Studies. $10 for adults; $5 for those age 55+ and under age 18; and free to Kirkwood students, faculty, and staff with a Kirkwood ID.

 

This is a general admission event; seating is first come, first served at the door, even for pre-purchased tickets. Doors open at 7:15 p.m. for this event.
