The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is one of New York’s best known and beloved spooky stories. Washington Irving’s famous tale, published in 1820, is ripe to thin the veil for our shadows to dance about and laugh with us in as we enter a darkening time of year. The tension and humor of ghostly Sleepy Hollow, set a stone’s throw east of the Hudson River’s (Mahicantuck’s) mid-southern banks, feels timeless in its retelling.
It may resonate with native Lenape traditions of oral storytelling from before their displacement by European and American colonists. There is also a kinship with traditional German folktales, which may have been present in the mind of Irving as he penned this story from his home in London. This adaptation fills its sonic environment with Catskills folk songs, foley art, classical themes, and a dash of the contemporary. There are puppets. Scary, funny, sincere, and a touch irreverent. Fun for everyone. Come scream, dance, laugh, and sing along.
