On New Year’s Eve, a young girl is sent out to sell matches after her abusive father is threatened by their landlord over unpaid rent. Unable to sell the matches the young girl begins lighting the matches for warmth, which expand into comforting fantasies. Meanwhile Rosemarie, is courted at a lavish New Year’s ball where she is exposed to the callous indifference of the upper class. As she sees the young Match Girl weakening, Rosemarie must decide between a life of cruel luxury or impoverished humanity.
