The Power of Prayer: Fixed or Free Flowing? Talmudic Texts that Unpack Jewish Origins of our Liturgy
Join a dynamic, interactive study cohort of classic and contemporary Jewish texts led by teachers from Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Israel. Each semester will consist of four classes and offer two tracks of study: one for the novice who has never encountered Talmud and one for the advanced beginner with some familiarity. Both tracks will engage with texts from tractate Berachot (blessings) around meaningful topics that have relevance for Jewish identity, with different levels of support accordingly.
This program is online only; classes will meet on Zoom on Sundays from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM.
JAN 28, FEB 11, FEB 25, MAR 10
This program is open only to members of Congregation Rodeph Sholom. We are committed to making this experience accessible to everyone. Please email Scott Hertz (shertz@crsnyc.org) to speak about reduced registration fees.
The almost 2 million words in the vast sea of text known as the Talmud reflects 2000 years of Jewish history, heritage and identity. This is Torah that belongs to all of us, but the textual complexity and foreignness of a page of Talmud can interfere with a sense of intimate connection. In our CRS/Pardes collaboration, we will aim to demystify these texts. In so doing, we hope to unleash the power of the text and point the way to contemporary meaning and relevant application that can instruct our daily lives.
CRS firmly believes that everyone should have access to Jewish wisdom and actively engage in learning with others. Inspired by this belief and our mutual love for Torah, we inaugurated a new partnership with Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Winter 2023. Our pilot program, the CRS/Pardes Winter Institute, was a resounding success, so we are pleased to expand this offering under the new name, Torah for Everyone.
The Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies is an open, inclusive, diverse and intellectually challenging Jewish learning community based in Jerusalem with programs worldwide. Pardes cultivates a life-long love of Jewish learning, the Jewish people and Israel. Pardes inspires engagement in Jewish life — as communal and spiritual leaders, educators and active participants.
