Description

Experience one of the most visually dazzling films ever made on the big screen. Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's The Red Shoes tells the story of Victoria Page, a gifted young ballerina torn between her devotion to dance and her love for a composer. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, this 1948 masterpiece blends romance, ambition, obsession, and the transformative power of art into a cinematic experience unlike any other. Moira Shearer stars in a breathtaking performance, while the film's extraordinary color, design, music, and extended ballet sequence have made it a landmark of British cinema. Winner of Academy Awards for Best Art Direction and Best Original Score, The Red Shoes remains essential viewing for anyone who loves film, dance, or the visual possibilities of cinema. Presented with Cinema I/O, this special free screening includes a film discussion, offering an opportunity to explore the artistry and ideas behind this enduring classic.
