“Shall we dance?” asks the King of Mrs. Anna in the beloved musical “The King and I”. The audience is swept away with the orchestra swelling as we watch Mrs. Anna’s dress sweep across the floor. Then there is Nellie Forbush taking a full shower onstage in “South Pacific”, the first time in musical theater history anything like that had been attempted, and it won over the audience. Those are just two of the most iconic scenes from those beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein shows presented by MPZ Productions.
MPZ Productions was created by Michael Pizzi, a performer-producer who is also an occupational therapist. MPZ Productions have established themselves as a community-oriented, family friendly theatrical concert organization in the Berkshires who also perform their shows elsewhere throughout the country. Berkshire residents and visitors have had the pleasure of seeing "A Jewish Journey through Broadway Parts 1 and 2", "Sinatra/Bennett", "An Evening with Oscar and Steve", and other shows featuring Broadway performers along with NYC based and local musicians. All of the original shows are created by Michael Pizzi. MPZ Productions also believe that entertainment should be for and about community, so a percentage of their net profits go to local food banks. They believe that food insecurity will only worsen, and that entertainment can and should serve a community's needs other than entertaining.
The new "Rodgers and Hammerstein Songbook" will feature songs from nearly all of their shows, most familiar but some not so familiar. While their ballads are most often sung, the show includes some fun comic numbers as well!
The audience will truly enjoy “Oklahoma”, “South Pacific”, “The King and I”, “The Sound of Music” and more sung by a cast of singers from Broadway and off-Broadway and a trio of incredible local musicians. Ed Watts has a glorious baritone-tenor voice that soars through songs from "Carousel" and "South Pacific" and many more.
Marissa McGowan uses her incredible talent in songs from "The Sound of Music", "Oklahoma" and "The King and I" and others. It is produced and directed by Michael Pizzi. Marissa and Ed have performed often on Broadway and throughout the country in many leading roles. They also perform some incredible and iconic duets from “Cinderella”, “Carousel”, “The King and I” and many others. Michael Pizzi will join them for several numbers, singing several ballads and comic numbers.
Performances are August 23 at 3 and 7:30pm at the Boland Theater at Berkshire Community College and can be purchased through www.mpz-productions.com. Email is mpzproducer58@gmail.com.
