Description

Based on the short-story by acclaimed Filipino American writer Carlos Buloson, The Romance of Magno Rubio is the Obie award-winning play about an illiterate Filipino farmworker in California’s Central Valley during the 1930s. Magno Rubio falls in love with a white woman from Arkansas through a pen-pal courtship and eventually learns some hard truths about love and romance and the American dream. Part of the Alaska Theater Festival 2026.

Featuring Andre Braza, Juan Castro, Patrick Elizalde, Jay Españo, and Flordelino Lagundino. Directed by Nathaniel Claridad.

**Theater Alaska’s mission is to make professional theater accessible to all. Therefore, we are using a pay-as-you-want ticket structure for this performance. This allows our audiences to pay the price that they can afford. For example, for $35 you are paying the market value of the ticket; for $50 you are also helping those in our community attend the show who are unable to afford the full price. You’ll be able to choose smaller amounts, including $0 as we want to make sure cost is not a barrier to attending the show.

This production is supported in part by the Juneau Arts and Humanities Council and the City and Borough of Juneau.

Support also provided by a Rasmuson Foundation 2025 Individual Artist Project Award, a Juneau Community Foundation Artist Award, Juneau Makerspace, and Filipino Community, Inc
