Description

The Shape of Wine: An Evening with Riedel Crystal Presented in partnership with the Memphis Wine Society

Pour the same wine into two different glasses, and you will swear someone switched the bottle. That is not a party trick. It is the discovery that made Riedel Crystal the most influential name in glassware in the world, and on this evening you will experience it firsthand, with four glasses in front of you and a Riedel expert walking you through every pour.

Founded in 1756 and family-owned through eleven generations, Riedel changed wine forever in 1958, when it began working directly with winemakers to design glass shapes tuned to individual grape varieties. The idea was radical at the time. Today it is simply how fine wine is served.

Leading the seminar is Skye Potter, wine expert and United States representative for Riedel Crystal. Over ninety guided minutes, Skye will show you exactly how bowl shape, rim, and surface direct aroma, control aeration, and steer wine to different parts of your palate. You will taste four wines, each in the glass engineered for it, and each in a glass that was not. The difference is not subtle, and it cannot be unlearned.

Every guest takes home the four-glass Riedel Performance tasting set, a $199 retail value and yours to keep. Performance is the first Riedel series ever made with a light optic bowl, a subtly ridged interior that increases surface area and lifts aromatics, and it was co-designed by Georg and Maximilian Riedel, father and son.

That detail is a fitting one here. The evening takes place inside Memphis College of Art, 1936-2020: An Enduring Legacy, the museum exhibition organized into groupings of faculty and their students, and the final show your museum is presenting in its original Overton Park home. Ninety works, ninety artists, one long chain of people teaching people. Guests are invited to arrive early and explore the galleries.

Eighty seats. Seated seminar. When they are gone, they are gone.
