Description
Presenting the controversial and gender-role focused Taming of the Shrew in FULL-DRAG! Doors open at 7:30pm and show at 8pm.
A practical joke gone too far leads a traveling group of divas to put on an immorality play about gaslighting. Coming to believe he is a lord, Christopher Sly watches with drowsy confusion as a dragged up troupe of players puts on a show of the worst men and women you've ever met go out of their way to marry each other whether they want to or not.
Back in Shakespeare's day, women were not allowed to perform on stage, so Shakespeare's iconic female characters were enacted by men and boys cinched and padded into Elizabethan gowns. This cross-dressing tradition became known as "drag" in English theatrical slang. Drag adapted and evolved, becoming increasingly associated with and embraced by the LGBTQ+ community. Drag is no longer only men dressing as women, but has become an art form and entertainment style defined by exaggerated gender performance. To continue our exploration of Shakespeare's Original Practices and their modern-day translations, we are excited to show how drag of the past meets drag of today.
