Description

Join us in April to celebrate and support the Village Playhouse with the return of the Playhouse Gala! On April 15th @ 7 PM, the entire building will come alive with passed hors d'oeuvres, cash bar, live music and art activations throughout the space, and incredible headlining act JANE BUNNETT & MAQUEQUE!

The past year has been full of new beginnings and new life for this local cultural landmark, and we want to celebrate this past season's achievements and look ahead to the future of this incredible theatre. With a goal of making this and future galas as accessible to as many people as possible, tickets for the evening will be just $25.00+HST, but patrons are encouraged to bring along a donation as well and become a friend of the Playhouse! Charitable receipts can be issued for any additional donation above $20.00, and donors will be thanked in our programs, online, in the lobby display, and based on donation level, may receive invitations to private events throughout the season!

While we have been very successful with grants and sponsorship, there are many outstanding capital improvements at the Playhouse that require some additional fundraising support! Lighting equipment repairs, finishing the accessible washroom, replacing the aging curtains, creating sound baffles, finishing our dressing room renovation, installing a washer and dryer, and beginning our capital campaign for our new elevator addition are all projects which we will be completing in the coming seasons, and most of which already have some government financial contribution, but are not yet fully covered. We need YOU!

Come and show your support this spring, and consider making a contribution to the Village Playhouse fund. While we recognize that not everyone can make a significant financial contribution, a gift in any amount that's major to you is major to us. Everyone is a donor of record in our eyes.

And you won't want to miss our headlining act for the evening...Jane Bunnett & Maqueque!

Five-time Juno Award winner, Jane Bunnett has turned her bands and recordings into showcases for the finest musical talent from Canada, the US, and Cuba. She has been nominated for three Grammy Awards, received The Order of Canada, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, and, most recently, The Premier’s Award for Excellence.

With Maqueque, Bunnett has created something new and phenomenal in the world of jazz. What started out five years ago as a project to record and mentor young brilliant Cuban female musicians, has become one of the top groups on the North American jazz scene. Since 2015, they have played in major jazz festivals like Newport and Monterey, been featured on NPR’s program Jazz Night in America, won a Juno Award for their first album, Jane Bunnett and Maqueque, were nominated for a Grammy Award for their second release, Oddara and were nominated for a Juno Award for their latest release, On Firm Ground/Tierra Firme. Most recently, they were voted as one the top ten jazz groups by the prestigious DownBeat magazine’s critics poll.

An internationally acclaimed musician, Bunnett is known for her creative integrity, improvisational daring, and courageous artistry. Her exploration of Afro-Cuban melodies expresses the universality of music, and her ability to embrace and showcase the rhythms and culture of Cuba has been ground-breaking. She has toured the world bringing her own special sound to numerous jazz festivals, displaying her versatility as a flutist, saxophone player, and pianist.

Maqueque are: Jane Bunnett, soprano saxophone & flute; Joanna Tendai Majoko, vocals; Mary Paz, congas & vocals; Dánae Olano, piano; Tailin Marrero, acoustic & electric bass; Yissy García, drums.

Join us for an incredible evening of revelry and excitement as we celebrate the Village Playhouse, arts and culture in our community, and YOU! We'll see you there!
