The Wiz - Music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls and book by William F. Brown
The Wiz is a cosmopolitan retelling of L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, placed in a 20th century African-American cultural context. A celebration of black music, our story begins in 2023 at the Kansas Village Apartments in Houston, TX where Aunt Em is hanging the laundry out to dry with little help from her scattered niece Dorothy. Next, the storm that will transport Dorothy to Oz, and introduce her to her new family: The Scarecrow, who wastes his brain hanging around with the crows, The Tin Man, a broken animatronic from a falling down amusement park, and The Cowardly Lion, an entrepreneur whose hard-nosed façade masks a sweet and sensitive tomcat. But when The Wiz forces Dorothy to battle the diva-divine Evillene to save her new friends, she learns that home isn’t where you live; it’s who you love and help love themselves.
