Description

Dr. Lori Quigley will discuss the creation of special boarding schools by the U.S. government for the purpose of “civilizing” American Indian youth and the trauma that has resulted from these social experiments. She will draw from the experience of her mother, Marlene Bennett, who at the age of five was designated an orphan and ward of New York state and placed in the Thomas Indian School, where she lived and was a student for ten years.

Niagara University will commemorate Every Child Matters Day, or Orange Shirt Day, with a series of events on September 30, 2024.

Dr. Lori V. Quigley has enjoyed a career in education that ranges from achieving the rank of tenured full professor, to serving as an academic dean, provost and president. Currently, she is a professor and department chair for the Ph.D. in Leadership and Policy at Niagara University. She is also an educational consultant and advisor to many school districts and colleges/universities in areas ranging from curriculum development to the strengthening of diversity, equity and inclusionary policies and practices.

Dr. Quigley's academic leadership roles have involved articulating a vision for the future and building a culture of intellectual excitement to shape centers of excellence and distinction by establishing a diversified portfolio of programs. Quigley established community partnerships, as well as demonstrated relationships with funders and major donors who committed to supporting several programs she initiated. In her work, she has focused a great deal of energy on the development and sustainability of programs that are socially just, culturally responsive, and aggressively seek to serve all students.

Dr. Quigley currently serves on the boards of the National Indian Education Association, the Alzheimer's Association of WNY, and the YWCA-WNY; chaired the Native American Indian Education Assoc. of NY for a decade; held a 2-term gubernatorial appt. on the NYS Minority Health Council; received a U.S. Presidential appt. (2004) to the Nat'l Advisory Council on Indian Education; was awarded the prestigious S.U.N.Y. Chancellor’s Award for Research and Scholarship among several other honors. In 2022, Buffalo’s Business First listed her as #95 out of the 200 most powerful women professionals in WNY, and presented her with one of the 25 prestigious Women of Influence awards. The Castellani Art Museum (CAM) at the center of the Niagara University campus is dedicated to the enjoyment and educational potential of artistic creativity. As a major resource for the visual arts in Niagara County, the CAM's permanent collection includes over 5,000 pieces of mainly modern and contemporary art, and hosts a unique Folk Arts Program supporting traditional artists and community-based cultural traditions in the Buffalo-Niagara region.

In keeping with Niagara University's Vincentian mission, the museum recognizes and serves the diverse racial, ethnic, and religious communities of the Niagara region through the organization and presentation of exhibitions which honor and explore their artistic traditions and contemporary output. In addition to presenting diverse artistic expressions, the museum works in partnerships to explore and redefine the relationship between the museum and its constituencies.

As a university museum, the Castellani Art Museum serves the educational needs of the community,  by working with Niagara University faculty on integrative learning projects for college students and providing art education programs for area schools and cultural organizations. The museum staff works with educators to develop art-based learning programs that help to promote critical thinking.
