13425 Visitor Center RoadFrank Cogliano will discuss his new book, Thomas Jefferson Survives: American Independence in His Time and Ours, co-authored with Peter Onuf.
Fifty years after signing the Declaration of Independence, John Adams reportedly reassured the nation from his deathbed: “Thomas Jefferson survives.” Unaware that Jefferson had died just hours earlier, Adams was, in a larger sense, correct—Jefferson had already been immortalized in the American imagination.
Dissatisfied with the simplified clichés that often define Jefferson’s legacy, Peter S. Onuf and Francis D. Cogliano return Jefferson to his historical context. Through three insightful essays, they explore how Jefferson’s understanding of history shaped his responses to the crises of his time, how he envisioned the physical and political shape of the United States, and how he articulated a new national identity in 1776.
Together, Onuf and Cogliano demonstrate not only why Jefferson matters in his own era, but also how his ideas continue to resonate and inform our understanding of America today.
