Join us for an inspiring day with three of Arizona's most accomplished photographers as they share the experiences, insights, and lessons that have shaped their remarkable careers.
Joel Grimes, Scott Baxter and Jeff Kida will explore topics ranging from reinventing yourself as an artist to the dedication behind long-term documentary projects, to the perspectives of one of the people helping to define the photographic vision of Arizona Highways.
The day concludes with a love audience Q&A giving attendees the opportunity to engage directly with all three presenters.
Presented by Through Each Others Eyes, this symposium celebrates the power of photography to deepen understanding of people, places and cultures while inspiring photographers at every stage of their journey.
The Speakers:
Joel Grimes earned his BFA in Photography from the University of Arizona in 1984 before going on to become a Canon Legend, a Westcott Top Pro Elite photographer, and one of Adobe’s Photoshop Feature Artists.
Over a 45-year career, his assignments have taken him to over 60 countries working with top advertising agencies and corporations.
His book Navajo, Portrait of a Nation was the basis for an 18-month solo exhibit at the Smithsonian American History Museum.
Known for his “illusionist” style of larger-than-life portraiture, Joel now teaches workshops and lectures worldwide, and makes his home in Wickenburg, Arizona.
A professional photographer for more than 30 years, his fine art photography of the American West captures the dichotomy between the elegance and untamed nature of the West. Baxter’s work is in numerous museums and private collections. and is in the permanent collections of The Phoenix Art Museum, Desert Caballeros Western Museum, Taos Art Museum, and Sky Harbor Airport Museum.
Baxter has shot editorially and commercially for Arizona Highways magazine, The New York Times and Yeti among others. A large body of Baxter’s work lies in long-term photography projects with historical significance, blending portraiture with working images representing the West.
After 30 years as a professional photographer and a longtime contributor to Arizona Highways, Jeff become the photography editor at the magazine in 2006. Today his responsibilities include image selection for the monthly magazine, books, special projects, and four annual calendars.
He began his career shooting for small dailies and as a stringer for the Arizona wire services. He joined the Phoenix Gazette in 1980 as a staff photographer, shooting news, marketing, and advertising, and stayed for eight years before returning to the freelance market, shooting for the Associated Press, The New York Times, The L.A. Times, and Time magazine, as well as Arizona Highways.
In recent years, he has also documented humanitarian work for the American Volunteer Medical Team and various other NGOs, taking him to places like the Congo, Rwanda, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka.

Free parking is available in the City of Scottsdale’s underground parking garage, accessible from the driveway just south of Main Street on the north side of the museum building. ADA-accessible parking spaces are available within the garage. Additional accessible parking for Western Spirit visitors is conveniently located at the southeast corner of Marshall Way and First Street.
