Description

Welcome to the Writer's Workbench!

A Practical Writing Workshop

NEW DATES!!

Wednesdays, 7pm - 8:30pm

Feb 4 - March 11

We teach writing like it’s woodworking or basketball or playing the bassoon. You learn woodworking by futzing around with tools in shop class. You learn basketball by shooting layups in your friend’s driveway. You learn to play an instrument by jamming in someone’s garage. Why can’t we teach writing like this?

In this class, we focus on putting tools in your hands, and letting you mess around. We don’t read and critique each other’s work—we bounce ideas back and forth, break stories at the whiteboard, and then run off & scribble things down without worrying what other people think.

Here’s what a class looks like: 1) Each week we’ll learn about a new tool or technique, and use it to try and ‘break’ a story together. 2) Then we’ll have a chance to mess around with the technique on our own, as part of a game or drill or wild experiment. 3) After that we’ll get back together to see what worked, what didn’t, to brainstorm second drafts, and to spitball other projects.

Instructor: Alexander Saxton has spent a decade running professional writers' rooms in digital media, TV, and audio. He knows how to help new writers bring their best ideas to the fore, and how to hold a space that’s safe, easygoing, and exciting. He can’t wait to be a fan of your work.
