MEET THE MAKER - In Person In Canberra From Tasmania
John came up last year for Whisky Capital, and Canberrans loved him & his whiskey! So this year we've brought him back again, and included him in several events throughout Canberra Whisky Week!
Come join John in-person at the Midnight Hotel for a full evening masterclass including half a dozen of his stellar whiskies as we drink and chat with the man who brought Pot Still whiskey distillation to Australia!
Transportation whiskey is the culmination of John Halton’s odyssey, a tribute to his ancestors from Ireland, some of whom received "transportation" during the mid-1800s, before settling in Cygnet, Tasmania. The distillery is named in reference to those English and Irish convicts who were sentenced to transportation. This involved travel from the British isles to Van Diemans land to serve 7 years of labour.
On one of his trips over to Ireland, John was at the Midleton Distillery, home of some of the worlds most revered single pot still whiskeys when a light bulb moment changed the course of his journey. He wondered why no one was making triple distilled, single pot still whiskey in Australia and went about changing that anomaly in good time.
After cutting his teeth in the Tasmanian whisky Industry, John started working on his dream of creating this Irish water of life, Tasmania’s versions of this iconic Irish style of whiskey and now it’s here, in all its Irish glory in very limited numbers.
A cheese & charcuterie platter is provided at in-person events. Please advise us via email if you have any allergies or dietary requirements that we need to be aware of.
This event is only for persons aged 18 years or older.
