Workshops Check-In 9:30 – 10 AM

Workshop – Creating Characters in Story 10 AM – 12:30 PM

Character development is grounded in experimentation, research and embodiment. We will build a sense of playfulness, safety and community, using prompts to explore characters in conversation and context, creating seeds from which full-blown stories – narratives or monologues – may grow. We’ll engage in pair/share, small group and solo exercises with reports-out to the larger group. Sometimes a story springs from a single sentence! If so, treasure that story-seed, water it with your attention, nurture it with respectful research, and see what it blossoms into!

Lunch On Your Own* 12:30 PM – 1:45 PM

Workshop – Hidden Gems 2 PM – 4:30 PM

Transitions—the moments in a story where we shift between one thought and the next—are hidden gems tucked away in a story well told. Whether you are your family’s unofficial historian or a professional teller, learning to master these moments will give your stories extra polish, finesse and the ability to surrender to what the story needs from you. This workshop will teach you how to identify and develop such transitions within your stories by practicing techniques with your eyes, voice, hands and posture.

Dinner On your Own* 4:30 PM – 6:45 PM

Check-in for Storytelling House Concert 7:00 PM – 7:30 PM

Storytelling Concert featuring Rocha and Burch 7:30 PM – 9:15 PM

In an intimate storytelling concert setting, two kinetic storytellers share old tales and new. Having performed around the world, Antonio will regale us with insightful and comical tales from the road. Milbre will call on the eloquence of embodiment and the immediacy of character to share a monologue close to home.

*The workshop/house concert location is a six-minute drive to Southern Village in Chapel Hill for easy access to restaurants and a local market with hot food ready to grab and go. For lunch or dinner options, see Al’s Burger Shack, La Dolce Vita Coffee Shop, Rasa Malaysia, Subway, Town Hall Grill and Weaver Street Market. Dinner only: Market and Moss. Also, Merritt’s Grill with the area’s best BLT is a 6-minute drive toward the UNC campus.
