“Unheard Voices” is an extra-curricular, student-led collaboration between the Instrumental Music and Creative Writing Departments, with additional contributions from Vocal Visual Arts, and Theater students, the first of its kind at HSPVA.

Featuring unique interpretations of works such as “Sir Duke” by Stevie Wonder and “Ain’t No Way” by Aretha Franklin, the performance also celebrates underrepresented and unheard voices of the music world. In honor of Black History Month, students and faculty came together to create an event that highlights the artistry and cultural impact of this community. Cadence and Color, a HSPVA student club dedicated to uplifting Black and women composers, played a vital role in organizing the performance.

One of its ensembles, the Evergreen Quartet, will present the world premiere of And Still We Cross by Emmy-winning Haitian-American composer Daniel Bernard Roumain, enjoined with poetry by Kenneth Morrison Jr, a direct descendant of Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington. And Still We Cross is a powerful meditation on migration, resilience, and the persistent quest for freedom, from the Underground Railroad to the Rio Grande. We are delighted to have composer DBR and poet/writer Kenneth Morris attend and speak briefly about the work. This co-commission was made possible through HSPVA’s on-going collaboration with Apollo Chamber Players and the generous support of HSPVA Friends.
